Sprekers
Michael Faure
Prof. Michael Faure studeerde rechten en criminologie aan respectievelijk de Universiteit Antwerpen en de Universiteit Gent. Hij behaalde tevens een LLM Diploma aan de University of Chicago. Hij doctoreerde aan de Albert Ludwigs Universität Freiburg met financiële steun van het prestigieuze Max Planck Instituut. Hij is lid van de balie van Antwerpen en sinds 1982 verbonden aan het advocatenkantoor van Goethem. Sinds 1986 is Mr. Faure zich gaan toeleggen op het milieurecht en meer bepaald het milieustrafrecht. Hij heeft als advocaat vele bekende en minder bekende strafzaken gepleit en adviseert zowel de overheid, bedrijven als particulieren met betrekking tot dossiers die handelen over (grensoverschrijdend) milieurecht en inzonderheid het transport van afval. Op academisch vlak is hij sedert 1988 verbonden aan verschillende academische instellingen in Nederland. Eerst halftijds als universitair (hoofd)docent bij de vakgroep Straf- en Strafprocesrecht van de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden; nadien (sedert 1 september 1991) als hoogleraar Vergelijkend en International Milieurecht en directeur van het Maastrichts Europees Instituut voor Transnationaal Rechtswetenschappelijk Onderzoek (METRO) aan de rechtenfaculteit van de Universiteit Maastricht. Sinds 1 februari 2008 is hij daarenboven ook halftijds verbonden als hoogleraar Comparative Private Law and Economics aan het Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics (RILE) van de Erasmus School of Law in Rotterdam. Daarnaast is hij academisch directeur van het Maastrichts Europees Instituut voor Transnationaal Rechtswetenschappelijk en academisch directeur van de Ius Commune Research School (sedert 1995) en is hij als haiwaimingshi (distinguished foreign professor) verbonden aan het Centre for Law and Economics van de China University of Political Science and Law. Tenslotte is hij Voorzitter van de Vlaamse Hoge Raad voor Milieuhandhaving (VHRM).
Boudewijn Bouckaert
Prof. em. dr. Boudewijn Bouckaert studeerde rechten en filosofie aan de Universiteit Gent. Hij richtte mee het Ludwig von Mises Instituut, Nova Civitas en Cassandra op. Thans is hij voorzitter van Libera! Op academisch vlak ontwikkelde Bouckaert aan de rechtsfaculteit van Gent de discipline van de rechtseconomie waaruit het Erasmus Mundus-project European Master in Law and Economics groeide. In zijn carrière was hij decaan van de rechtsfaculteit, zetelde hij in de raad van bestuur van de universiteit, gaf hij gastcolleges o.a. aan Harvard en het Institute for Humane Studies, en was hij uitgever van de Encyclopedia of Law and Economics. Hij was tevens enige tijd voorzitter van het Overlegcentrum van Vlaamse Verenigingen en Vlaams Parlementslid.
Sven Höppner
Dr. Sven Hoeppner studeerde rechten en economie (M. Sc) aan de Humboldt University Berlin en behaalde, met een volledige beurs van de Europese Commissie, masterdiploma’s in law & economics (M.L.E., E.M.L.E.) van respectievelijk de Universiteit van Bologna, de Universiteit van Gent (LL.M) en de Universiteit van Haifa. Hij is als onderzoeker verbonden aan de Universiteit van Gent (Center of Advanced Studies in Law and Economics of ‘CASLE’) en het Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn. Voordien was hij als onderzoeker verbonden aan de Humboldt University Berlin Law School. Begin dit jaar behaalde hij, onder begeleiding van prof. Ben De Poorter, een doctoraat met als titel “LEGAL FRAMING. Reference-dependent evaluation of legal consequences.” Recent werd hij onderscheiden met de Brenno Galli Award 2015, een prijs van de Italian Society of Law and Economics die wordt uitgereikt aan de meest veelbelovende onderzoeker die een paper voorstelt op het jaarlijkse congres van de Italian Society Of Law and Economics. Höppner kreeg deze prijs voor de paper die hij schreef met onderzoekster Laura Lyhs (Max Planck Instituut): “Effects of Standard Vagueness: Legal Uncertainty in the Lab”. De paper analyseert de vaak botsende perspectieven op wettelijke onzekerheid.
Frank Wijckmans
Frank Wijckmans studeerde rechten aan de Universiteit van Antwerpen en de Universiteit van Virginia (LLM). Hij is verbonden aan de balie van Brussel en partner van het Belgische advocatenkantoor contrast. Hij is voornamelijk gespecialiseerd in het (Europees) Mededingingsrecht maar heeft ook een indrukwekkende ervaring opgebouwd als geschillenbeslechter (ICC, CEPINA, ad hoc arbitrage). Hij is professor verbonden aan de Brussels School of Competition waar hij het vak ‘The Law of Economics of Vertical Restraints” doceert. Daarnaast geeft hij gastcolleges aan de Universtiteit van Antwerpen en de Solvay Business School. Hij is co-auteur van verschillende monografieëen uitgegeven bij Oxford University Press, waaronder ‘Vertical Agreements in EU Competition Law’ en ‘’Horizontal Agreements and Cartels in EU Competition Law’. Zijn meest recente publicatie handelt over de Private Schadevergoedingsrichtlijn in Mededingingszaken.

Speakers
Michael Faure
Michael Faure studied law and criminology at the University of Antwerp and Ghent University respectively. He also holds an LLM degree from the University of Chicago. He was a PhD researcher at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg (with financial support granted by the prestigious Max Planck Institute). Currently, he is a member of the Antwerp bar and associated with the Belgian law firm van Goethem. Since about 1986 he laid his main focus on environmental law and environmental criminal law in particular. As a lawyer, he pleaded an enormous amount of well and lesser known cases in this legal area, advising all kinds of stakeholders, including governmental services, companies and private individuals. As regards his academic career, he became professor at several universities in the Netherlands, including Leiden University. Currently, he teaches Comparative and International Environmental Law at Maastricht University and Private Law and Economics at the Erasmus School of Law in Rotterdam. In addition, he is one of the very few haiwaimingshi (distinguished foreign professor) at the Centre for Law and Economics of the China University of Political Science and Law. Finally, he chairs the Flemish High Council for Environmental Enforcement (VHRM).
Sven Höppner
Dr. Sven Hoeppner is research associate at the Center of Advanced Studies in Law and Economics (CASLE) at Ghent University Law School and Affiliate Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn. Previously Sven Hoeppner has been research associate at Humboldt University Berlin Law School. He holds a Ph.D. in Law from Ghent University. He graduated from Humboldt University Berlin in both legal science (German 1st legal state exam) and business economics (M.Sc.). Afterwards he advanced his education in law and economics on a full scholarship of the European Commission and since Sven Hoeppner holds master degrees in law and economics (M.L.E., E.M.L.E.) from the University of Bologna, Ghent University and in law (LL.M.) from Haifa University. Recently, he has been awarded with the Benno Galli Award (most promising research fellow who presents a paper at the annual congres of the Italian Law & Economics Society)
Boudewijn Bouckaert
Prof. em. dr. Boudewijn Bouckaert studied law and philosophy at Ghent University. He co-founded the think tanks Ludwig von Mises Institute, Nova Civitas and Cassandra. Currently, he chairs the think tank Libera! As regards his impressive academic career it is fair to say he developed the law & economics at Ghent University’s Law School and paved the way for the well reputed Erasmus Mundus project ‘European Master in Law and Economics’. For several years, he was the Dean of Ghent University’s Law School and board member of the University. He gave guest-lectures at reputed institutes such as Harvard and the Institute for Humane Studies and co-published the Encyclopedia of Law & Economics. Finally, he was active on the political field as well, ultimately becoming a member of the Flemish Parliament.
Frank Wijckmans
Prof. Frank Wijckmans graduated from the University of Antwerp and obtained a Master’s degree at the University of Virginia (USA). He is a member of the Brussels bar and partner of the Belgian law firm contrast. He is active in the fields of EU and competition law and Belgian business and has extensive experience as negotiator, litigator and arbitrator (ICC, CEPINA, ad hoc arbitration). He is professor at the Brussels School of Competition, where he teaches “The Law of Economics of Vertical Restraints”. He is guest lecturer at the University of Antwerp and the Solvay Business School. He has an extensive publication record in the fields of EU competition law and EU and Belgian distribution law. He is the co-author of a monograph published by Oxford University Press on the current EU competition law regime applicable to vertical agreements, including motor vehicle distribution, ‘Vertical Agreements in EU Competition Law’. He edited and co-authored a monograph recently published by Oxford University Press on ‘Horizontal Agreements and Cartels in EU Competition Law’. His most recent publication is a brief monograph published by Intersentia on ‘The EU Private Damages Directive’.
